Welcome Back to the Dark Ages, Yahoo

Yahoo’s recent announcement of banning employees from working at home has upset many, and rightfully so. Since Mayer’s took on the CEO role at Yahoo, she has set many precedents in hopes of turning around the Internet pioneer. However, her latest decision might rally a backlash that will cause more harm than good. Here are three reasons why Mayer’s might have just made the biggest mistake yet:

    1.     The employees who are unproductive working from home will be just as unproductive working in the office.

    2.     Micromanaging is only telling your employees you don’t think they can do their job without having someone looking over their shoulder.  It will be like living at home again with your parents. How fun.

    3.     Yahoo should now expect to lose their top performers. The top performing employees don’t necessarily need Yahoo, but Yahoo probably needs them. With the recent announcement, Yahoo can expect those employees to walk away gracefully to another innovative technology company.

As a technology company, in 2013, they should have better utilized the tools available in today’s market., such as Bloomfire, a knowledge sharing tool for the MODERN workforce – encouraging collaboration, innovation, and cohesion. Just ask one of our many Fortune 500 companies. Yahoo has taken many steps back into another century, one that is archaic and has rigid ‘organizational structure’.

By Mayer making the decision to restrain her employees from telecommuting, she has made it clear to the public that her and her team have not implemented the proper tools to allow for an effective telecommuting company. Congratulations Yahoo, you have officially gone back to the dark ages. Other technology companies are shaking their heads at you, and recruiting your top employees.
